Part P
Part P is an electrical safety law within the Building Regulations and was introduced by the Government on 1st January 2005. The aim of Part P is to further enhance the protection of homeowners, improve electrical safety in the home and prevent life-threatening accidents that are caused by faulty electrics. All electrical work must comply with BS 7671 of the Wiring Regulations.
The law requires an electrician registered with a Government-approved scheme, such as NICEIC or ELECSA to carry out most electrical work in the home, and once the work is finished, provide you with Part P approval. Proof of membership is obtainable from the relevant association website under their registration search.
By using a contractor who is registered with a Competent Persons Scheme such as ELECSA or NICEIC, the contractor will be able to self-certify that the work meets the required standards and that it has been notified to the local authority.
NICEIC
NICEIC is the UK electrical contracting industry’s independent voluntary body. NICEIC offers leading certification services, Building Regulations Schemes, products and support to electrical contractors and many other trades within the construction industry. Over 25,000 contractors are registered with the NICEIC and take advantage of products and services including:
- Listing on the NICEIC Roll of Approved Contractors
- Competent Persons Schemes, including Part P
- Industry recognised training
- Unrivalled technical support
- DVDs and publications
- Contractor Insurance
- Customer and industry support
- Products including test equipment, tool bags and certificates
NICEIC registration demonstrates an Electrician's skills and professionalism and gives the customer peace of mind that they are dealing with an accredited tradesman.
ECA
Founded in 1901, the Electrical Contractors’ Association is the UK’s leading trade association representing the interests of contractors who design, install, inspect, test and maintain electrical and electronic equipment and services.
The ECA provides a comprehensive range of tools and expert support services to over 3,000 Registered Members. Members range from local contractors to national building services organisations and collectively have an annual turnover of more than £5 billion, employ over 30,000 operatives and support 8,000 apprentices in craft training.
The ECA also works with regulatory bodies, government and opinion formers to build an efficient and sustainable industry, based on high standards of training and practice. Through representation and lobbying, the ECA actively leads on key issues including safety, training, qualification and technological development.
